Hi folks,
can anyone tell me how long you would tumble white and yellow gold
rings in steel shot to harden their surfaces? And is it worth it in
terms of reducing scratching/wear for customers?
thanks,
Miche

There is an ongoing effort to determine method and measurement on
hardening precious metals. Impingement, precipitation hardening and
other forms are under consideration. The first report will be at
the Santa Fe Symposium in May. I believe Stewart Grice from Hoover
and Strong and Andrew Nyce are part of that research.
In the mean time, why don’t you try the steel shot? I’d be cautious
about tumbling nickel white gold, it seems to react poorly with
stress.

Thanks Judy,
It’s palladium white gold I’ll be trying it on. Any thoughts on how
many hours to tumble?
