    If you want an eye opener on cost of materials vs pricing, you should
    look at the spread of prices for Cubic Zirconia advertised on the
    internet. CZ is very inexpensive to produce and the rough sells for
    pennies a carat (this for Russin CZ touted to be the best available).
    Companies use very imaginative descriptions to justify high prices.
    Some examples (all have "Russina" CZ) 

    "Yes, technically they are cubic zirconia, but they are of the
    highest grade available on the market today" $50.00 a carat ($100.00
    a carat for "Special" cut stones). 

    Claim to have the "world's finest man made gems" (russian CZ). Around
    $40 to $50 a carat. 

    Our  Russian CZs are the finest cubic zirconia available. $23.95 a
    carat - however they seem to be mesuring carats by stone diameter
    and calculate the carats as if they were diamonds (a 6MM stomes is
    listed as 3/4 carat). 

    Other prices seen (without the hype)
    $6.00 a carat
    $3,50 per carat
    35 cents a carat to as low as 8 cents a carat for an 800 carat stone.
