    You asked about "...Nikolas 2105 Spray Lacquer on brass. Does this
    create a really shiny finish because I am not looking for that. " 

    I have used this product for several years and it does leave a
    shiney finish. Nikolas may make a lacquer with a matte finish, but 
    I suspect that a matte finish will polish up if it is subjected to
    any wear. 

    I don't have an alternative. You may have a problem achieving your
    desired appearance and avoiding a tarnish.
