Wow Jessie,

Parts of your post could have been taken verbatim from conversations
I've had over the years. I agree whole heartedly that there needs--
for me-- to be some compelling reason to revisit work again and
again. I've even used the same analogy of the one liner, or the laugh
track that cues us into how and when to respond.

For instance, I've seen a lot of narrative work that is leading or
whose "one liner" theme I can grasp quickly and, without some formal
or other reason to stay around and look some more I don't remember
very well. There has to be more-- some visual layering or
    composition that keeps me interested.

I've seen some classically beautiful work or objects that are
undeniably pleasing but which don't have some indiscribable quality
or depth in my eyes that make them truly remarkable.

It is the combination of all these qualities that in my mind make an
object-- for lack of a better term-- good art. (Note: I didn't say
    "Valid art".)

I guess what I'm responding to is the notion that disturbing
thematic content or non traditional, quirky or strange
interpretations of beauty is somehow off limits in the definition of
    art (or good art).

    There are, truly, no absolutes.

What's interesting to me is how much people want there work to be
considered art and have what I read as a narrow definition of what
    art is.

There is a photographer named Jose Antonio Martinez whose images are
somewhat shocking but beautiful and quite compelling. I saw a show
of his in Oaxaca Mexico last year. I would gladly hang his work in
my house. Check him out: I'm sure he's on Google.

    Take care and well said,

Andy Cooperman
