    How sad it is that this is so true - especially of so many drivers
    that are barely aware that other people exist in the cars they see
    only as obstacles... 

    On the subject of door-holding, I am an inveterate door-holder
    myself. I'll hold a door for anyone who happens to be going through
    it near the same time I do. Most people do appreciate it, though many
    seem a bit surprised, so the response is often, "Oh! Thanks!" 

    Of course, there are exceptions - it's amazing how many of those moms
    struggling with their Land Rover prams will run you down in a store
    aisle with all the sensitivity of a charging bull elephant, in spite
    of the fact that you held the door for a full extra minute for them
    when they entered the store in the first place. And then there are
    the pop tartlets who can't be bothered to interrupt their cell phone
    conversations or to spare you so much as a glance as they breeze
    through the door you're holding in a cloud of hairspray fumes. 

    Fortunately, though, the "Oh! Thanks!" folks far outnumber the rude
    ones, and as cheesy as it sounds, you can enjoy the satisfaction of
    having made the world, for one bright moment, a teeny little smidgen
    better.
