Christen:

    What you might want is asphaltum.  This is a common resist used by
    printmakers, and etching is essentially a printmaking medium. 
    Asphaltum can be easily obtained by many sources.  It can be thinned
    and removed by using mineral spirits or turpentine. 

    There is another excellent non-toxic product called Zacryl.  It is a
    water based polymer which is poured on with the excess dripped off. 
    You let it dry and then scratch as you would your "tar" resist.
