Jay,

    I think copper would be your best choice. It is a pure metal and it
    works very similarly to sterling silver. You can buy copper at
    Allcraft or Metilliferous (both in NY). 

    Brass is a mixture of 2 metals and although you are looking for the
    color it is not as easy to work with.
