Hi Lee,

Only if you consider the very surface. Lapidary Journal is a
commercial magazine, which exists (at the bottom line) to make money
for its owners/publishers. Towards that end, it has slowly evolved
into a crafters' magazine as much as anything else. I imagine it
would have changed its name to something more reflective of the
current content if the publishers weren't concerned about losing
legacy subscribers/readers. (Ornament took that risk when its name
was changed from The Bead Journal many years ago, and it paid off.
LJ may have made a big mistake in the long run, since it is losing
legacy readers regardless, at the same time as its name probably
    misleads its intended audience.)

Metalsmith, as you know, is a publication of SNAG, a not-for-profit
organization to which all of us may or do belong. Its mission and
standards are quite different. Ultimately its direction and concept
are determined by the SNAG membership, as interpreted by SNAG's
leadership. Traditionally (and for reasons previously discussed on
this thread), that leadership is demonstrably (and in my opinion,
disproportionately) friendly to the avant garde which is concerned as
much with design innovation as with medium.
