I would like to thank John L. Jensen for his thoughtful posting.
Stories like his warm my heart. I'm very pleased that he has seen
the changes and growth in SNAG in recent years. Many people have
worked hard to make this happen.

In recent years I have seen many people take another look at SNAG
and find that they are pleasantly surprised by what they find. One
of the best ways to do this is to attend a conference. As I said
earlier, Metalsmith is just one of the things the organization does.

I do want to correct one misconception in John's posting. You do not
have to be a member of SNAG to be in either the EIP or Metalsmith.
There is a higher application fee for the EIP for non members, but
that's the only difference. Membership has no bearing on acceptance.
The jury has no way of knowing who is a member and who isn't. It's
all about the work. The same is true about the regular issues of the
    magazine.

The policy on the EIP is that if you get juried in one year, you are
not eligible to apply for the next juried issue. I got in to the
2002 juried EIP and I couldn't apply to the 2004 juried one. This
was put in place to broaden the publication and give more people the
chance to get into the EIP. Unless things have changed, the policy
doesn't apply to the curated issue. It was felt that the curator's
hands shouldn't be tied down. He or she should have the option of
including whatever work they think appropriate to the theme of the
    issue.

I would like to second something John said and encourage you to get
involved in what ever capacity you feel comfortable. He had some
really good suggestions. It can make a difference. The world is
changed by the activists, those that take the time to get involved
    and do the work.

I think that many of us have frustrations about our field and I
think this thread has been a reflection of those frustrations. Some
of these concerns are bigger than SNAG and Metalsmith magazine. We
don't get the respect we deserve. We are in a small field that has
struggled for broader visibility and acceptance. Most people don't
understand what we do. We don't even have a name for our field that
people understand or that we can agree on. When I meet someone new
socially it takes me ten minutes to try to explain my work. We lack
what in advertising parlance is called "branding." As they said in
the old Paul Newman movie Cool Hand Luke, "What we have here is a
failure to communicate." (add Southern accent)

SNAG and Metalsmith try to help in this regard, and progress has
been made, but is slow work. I see SNAG as a place where we can pool
our energy and resources to have more impact that we do as
individuals. We can speak with a louder voice.

Thanks John, Marianne, Andy and the rest of you for the thoughtful
    dialog.

Best,
Don Friedlich
