Michael,

I couldn't agree more with your comments:

I have worked as a sculptor and sound/installation artist for many
years. Three years ago I found myself in a day job that was light
years away from making things with my hands. I realized that I
needed to make things to be happy. I love making jewellery. I love
the rich history, the craft, and the fact that I have the potential
to make a living doing something I truly enjoy.

My observation of Metalsmith is that the artists often seem
self-consciously absorbed with embuing their work with meaning - as
if there is this constant need for it to be seen as "art" and not
merely "jewellery" or "holloware". It is my experience that an
artists investigation leads where it will and the end of the journey
is largely unknown. No matter how conservative or far out an artists
work may be - if they are really searching for what it is they are
meant to do - it can not help but be interesting.

To dismiss work because of the category it falls into is to limit
    one's opportunity for new experiences.

All the best,
Donna Hiebert
