    I'm beginning to wonder if there isn't a need for clarification of
    what Metalsmith's article meant by "smart" jewelry.  I don't think it
    referred in any way to the intelligence or designing ability of the
    jeweler, but rather to the current or future status of the jewelry in
    the fashion world.  The closest synonym I can think of would be
    "chic".  (Now That's a smart outfit you're wearing!)
