========[ Invite a Friend - http://www.ganoksin.com/invite.htm ]======== Hi Don, I wanted to thank you for your writings on the EIP in Orchid It has helped me see the EIP in a different light. I am still not a fan of the majority of work shown but between your and Andy's words on it I now have a somewhat greater appreciation for it. I know you did some good work on trying to bring the working metalsmith more into the fold with SNAG but it still feels like we have no place that celebrates the working artisan. SNAG is still too academic (and probably always will be) and mainstream jewelry organizations/publications if they ever actually focus on the work seem to laud the designer who probably did no more than a sketch or maybe carved a rough model and then left it to the benchies to breathe life into it. Where is the the organization that represents the skilled artisan/maker/designer who has no pretension to high concept art or does not wish to try to reach for celebrity status design? When I first got started making studio jewelry twenty odd years ago it seemed that SNAG was that place but now they will not even think about publishing any technique articles in Metalsmith but relegate anything of that sort to the newsletter which is unreadable due to the small font, dense page layout and tiny black and white photos (this is not a slam of the newsletter staff who put out a good product given the restrictions of finances and time resources). This brings me to one of the things I love about Orchid, it is a place where a large amount of the focus is on making work and sharing information on how to make the work better. Hanuman has been doing marvelous things by bringing many articles from a variety of publications into the archive and all of the writings presented by Charles Lewton-Brain and the new writings by others that have found a place in the archive. However the archive is still basically a library it is a place to go and do research. What I want is a magazine with the production quality of Metalsmith but with a focus on makers and makers issues not high concept art. A periodical with relevance to what I do something for the studio artisan.
