    I agree with Jim. If I had the chops, etc., I'd rather do repairs
    than have a non-jewelry day job--I could only improve the skills I
    want to use anyway. 

    And custom work can be wonderful--I just finished a necklace I hated
    to send off to a faraway state. My client's daughter, while visiting
    here, picked out the basic design and all the components. It felt
    like collaborating with another artist and, as her mother says, it's
    gorgeous.
