Seems like each generation forgets itself as it gets older, perhaps?
Maybe this is an off target observation, but it seems that one of the
most 'general' statements that might come from this mindset is that
each generation has worked hard to find easier ways to live, both for
itself and for its children and grandchildren. Then we complain like
blazes when the next generation does the same. We all want for our
children to have it easier than we did, yet we want them at the same
time to know the value of some good hard work.

My kids have no understanding of life without computers. I was in
college before calculators became commonplace, but still have only
the vaguest idea of using slide rules. We live now, most commonly,
in multi-vehicle, multi-sob families. When I was young, only my dad
worked, and we had one car. His parents raised him on one job and
public transportation. Back up from microwaves to regular ranges all
the way back to wood or coal fired stoves. While there are some in
each generation who choose to live in a simpler time, we mostly try
to make our lives and the lives of those to follow easier.
