    I usually create best when there is some background music.  It tends
    to mask the other sounds around me that do disturb.  When I am in the
    store, there are constant conversations between the sales people,
    customers, etc.  If I don't have some background music to cover that
    up, I find myself getting involved in the conversations to a point
    where it is distracting.  When I'm at home, 2 kids and assorted
    critters, plus all of the TV, XBox and other sounds that go along
    with a busy family can be a distraction, too.  After a stint of 'work
    at home' a few years ago, I did get better at tuning out the
    distractions while staying aware enought to be useful to the family
    if needed, but I still like some music most of the time. 

    As to what, it depends.  On what?  My mood, obviously, and my needs.
     Do I need something to pick up the pace?  Classic rock, some
    classical, other higher energy types of music.  Do I need to calm
    down?  'Mood music' instrumentals, gentle classical.  General,
    everyday?  Mood takes precedence. Blues, new country, classic rock,
    folk, oldies from the 60s.  Sometimes it depends on what I'm working
    on, too.  I'll pick one thing if I'm in mindless production mode,
    either finishing a pile of castings or sizing a bunch of rings that
    require comparatively little mental agility.  I'll pick another if I
    am working on a complex custom piece or repair.  And yet another if
    I am creating new pieces and need some inspiration to keep things
    flowing.
