I can totally relate to this - I usually spend about ten minutes at
the beginning of each work session meandering around the studio and
generally tidying up, all to no real end since I'm about to mess it
up anyway. It seems that no real work can be done until everything
is restored to its proper order. Likewise, I have to have the
Flex-shaft in just the right spot (from which it rarely moves), the
chair at just the right height, etc. etc., or I just feel
discombobulated and easily get distracted. This is all especially
important if I'm doing repetitive tasks, like de-spruing and filing a
bunch of identical pieces. And it does mean that I sometimes ignore
a way of making things more efficient because it's not part of the
    routine.

I also find it difficult to go from a mechanistic task to a more
intensely involved creative process - I can never spend a half day
soldering rings onto charms and then switch gears to work on an
intricate constructed piece. I guess many others out there share
    this tendency.

On the subject of smells and a general environment aiding flow - so
true! I've often found the smell of the studio conducive to
creative thought (which is kind of worrisome, as the cats'
litterboxes are just across the room). Other smells that spark the
"flow" for me are rubber cement (just don't inhale too deeply!), the
smell that steel leaves on your hands (as when you're filing), and
the faintly earthy/phenolic smell of a kneaded eraser.

I wonder if the difference in male/female music preference has to do
with the allegedly greater communication in women between the brain's
    hemispheres, as

well as the female propensity toward multitasking. I generally
like to have some tunes, or at least the window open so I get ambient
    outdoor sounds.
