    In NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) we call this anchoring.  And
    all of this goes back to Pavlov's principle.  Ring the bell, and
    watch the dog salivate. 

    It is also the main principle behind advertising.  Associating a
    paticular product w/ a jingle, picture, phrase, etc.  This is also
    the basis for things like a couple who has "our song", or mementos. 
    We do this for both positive things and things that are less
    positive.  For example a particular voice, person's face or place
    that gives us a negative feeling could be an anchor, triggering a
    reaction and totally unrelated the situation in front of you.
