========[ Invite a Friend - http://www.ganoksin.com/invite.htm ]======== I asked a couple of people I know if they knew of any research on this subject. And only one person vaugely remembered a paper they had seen which said while music was a help, at a certain point it could also intefere w/ getting into a focused state. A couple of folks I asked thought they the music might serve to perhaps fill the place where we normally have internal dialouge. Which prompts the question. When you are in flow working on your piece are you aware of the music or TV/radio chatter? or do you ignore the outside noise at a certain point? For me personally, I can't have any sounds around while I am concentrating and getting into the "flow" state, but I am not sure once I am there how music would intefer that much. Probably depends on the volume and the type of music. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi talks about a study where they found those best able to stay in flow were best able to ignore outside distractions. Since, I sometimes consider "flow" a trance phenomenon, anything that breaks trance like loud music/noise or music/sound that has odd rhythms could potentially be distracting. Flow/trance depending on what you are doing can either be directed at something outside your body like a piece of jewelry in front of you or something inside your head like designing a piece or writing a poem. Either way, like most other things, supposedly the more you practice maintaining flow the easier it theoretically becomes to maintain and to ignore outside distractions. Flow is also a constantly changing state. It is said there have to be rules, a goal, and a way of obtaining feedback. And if so, perhaps part of the challenge can be to break up your project into simpler and more discrete tasks/steps so it can become easier to stay in flow. If the task is too easy we get bored, too complex and we get frustrated. It can often be a narrow band, we attempt to stay in. I'm going to see if I can ask some more questions or do some more research as time permits and explore this some more. It is a fascinating subject to me. And since flow can occur in any task, may you all find some of part of your day in FLOW.
