Joel Elfman has raised some interesting issues here. As a former
educator it reminded me that, when children are exposed to certain
types of music at an early age, they tend to have better math and
logical reasoning skills. This is why it is so important to retain
music and art programs in schools today. I've often thought that the
music could be the most logical interface between the left and right
sides of the brain; One side calculating, logical, speech centered,
the other chasing after the less defined modes of thought like art,
    beauty and so on.

When I'm creating I try to engage the left brain by discussing with
myself the pro's and con's of a particular approach. There is often
a severe internal dialogue going on. On the same level though I find
it easy to shift over to the part of my brain that thinks only in
pictures. I'm not struggling with the words to define my process,
I'm "seeing" the possibilities available and their possible
consequences. I believe that this is every bit as valid as a form of
critique as anything verbal. Whenever another person enters the
picture however, I am unable to use this sense because my only
communication with them must remain in the verbal sense. Too much
logic equates to breaking the thread of creative impulse.

Music very frequently interferes as well. If a tune requires too
much logical thought (ie I find I simply must sing along) or if it
is too complex (most operas, some improvisational jazz that sounds
like a riot in a zoo) I just can't create well. Silence often serves
me well. Most of the time though Franz Joseph Hayden, Mr. Mozart,
Litzt?, Tchaikowsky and I get along pretty well. It's interesting
because, for a good part of my life, if it wasn't serious get down
rowdy rock-n-roll, it simply didn't qualify as music. Closed minds
    are dangerous.

Mike
