    I wonder why it is most of us need music or some background sound to
    help us focus. 

    There is an old scientific study that determined that the conscious
    mind of the average person can only handle 7+/- 2 bits of
    information at a time.  While the definition of what constitutes a
    bit of information is fairly flexible, I wonder if all those bits
    have to be occupied for us to focus most effectively. 

    Another possible alternative/parallel theory is since we talk to
    ourselves all the time perhaps music helps keep that part of our
    brain where we have this internal dialouge busy.
