I second that exact same approach! I will also vary that routine
with books-on-tape or some music, either new age/trance or flat out
boogie-woogie rock'n'roll and blues, depending on a number of
variations. If I need to be very calm and attentive because I'm
working on something that requires me to be totally "in the zone", I
will gravitate towards quiet music. For work that is more
production oriented, I like to get out the Stones, or some Dick Dale
guitar, and try to stay in my seat. But the majority of the time, I
find that listening to the spoken word absorbs the brain's need to
be occupied, and allows the visuals to take over the tasks at hand.
After all, you don't really need to think about what you are doing
all of the time, but you need to watch as the tasks are being
accomplished. I go through the library's mysteries and Stephen
King novels as fast as I can bring them home. (I like the long
unabridged versions.) I can honestly say that I remember far fewer
tapes than I do of the books I actually read. I'm sure it's because
I'm not really focused on the stories as much as I am on the work
I'm doing, but I'm using them as a means to keep my mind distracted
and occupied. It's kind of like a meditative tool, a verbal
mandala. What ever keeps the "drunken monkey" busy!
