this thread is so interesting and i'm feeling reassured that i'm not
the only one needing 4-8 hours at the bench at one time. something
my sweet husband cannot understand. he said to me, "but surfing
should be an interruption that just flows along with your
creativity" or something like that. and yes, surfing is very zen in
its own way, but i still had to GET UP FROM THE BENCH to do it!

anyway, thanks to all who have put in their two cents. here is mine:

luckily, out here there is a smooth jazz station that comes in
great. i turn it on as soon as i walk into the studio and turn it
off when i'm finished for the day. i recognize and register a lot of
the songs and if i really like one, i am especially aware that it is
on -- for about 10 seconds, then who knows how many songs go by
before i register another. i can't work in silence very well, and
music other than this nice, but rather bland station is too much for
me. i am a multitasker, but do seem to be able to shut off the
drunken monkey. i don't think about much when i'm at the bench
besides my current project. BUT, put people in the house with me (my
studio is a spare bedroom) or other music and i'm doomed. the
concentration goes out the window. i do have the added benefit of
living in the tropics with no A/C so my fan or fans are on full
blast and the windows are all open, adding much more noise to my
world than i would get in a closed studio.

thanks again!

jocelyn
