Yes, Noel, there are others something like this. I watch TV and
listen to NPR while doing all sorts of things (like, washing dishes,
and doing the less creative things that one must do in
jewelrymaking). I relate it partly to the fact that those kinds of
things must be done but are really boring! To avoid frustration, I
like to do more than one thing at a time. I like our portable phone
because I can listen interminably and get a lot of other stuff done!
[Yes, I can also tell people that I have to hang up.....]

When I go to meetings which I am not leading, I often take wire to
make beads with, or paper to cut into designs. It keeps me from
participating too much and from being bored. If the
meeting/lecture is really interesting, or if I'm too tired, I just
    don't get any artwork done.

When I was writing my Masters thesis (Metals and Metalworkers in
the Ancient Near East), I used to play three records [this was in
the late '60s] over and over and over: Simon and Garfunkel (Sounds
of Silence), French harp music, and honky-tonk piano. This was
somehow satisfying. I found that playing the usual classical
music which I love tapped into a part of the brain which I was
using to write with, so I couldn't listen to that.

Other tales of the mind?
