========[ Invite a Friend - http://www.ganoksin.com/invite.htm ]======== Larry, Are you asking for actual iron (Fe on a periodic chart) or just a source for brand new steel? The question is important because most of the stuff you'd find at a junkyard is steel. Steel is iron that was smelted in the presence of quite a bit of carbon and, depending on the type of steel, certain other metals like chromium, molybdenum etc... Believe it or not there are numerous sites on the web dealing with blacksmithing and these fine people are much like this Orchid group. They frequently interact and share ideas, sources of metals and information. In fact I found the Ganoksin website while doing research for a blacksmithing project I was working on. As for local sources check out machine shops in your area. Depending on your needs, say-you are looking for a bench block-, they will often have short pieces of what they consider scrap that would fit your needs very well. They will often give you small pieces or sell them to you for the price of scrap metal. It's usually not an expensive proposition. Another excellent source is local welding shops or fabrication services. The great thing about using other folks scrap is that, even if you don't usually hug trees for giggles, it is essentially recycling. Anyway a lot of legwork like this can be done by telephone. If you have a good idea of what you want it's usually pretty easy to obtain. I'm afraid I don't have much different advice if you are actually looking for plain iron. The same folks that I've already suggested would be the ones most likely to send you down the path to Iron as well.
