    Dear Orchid Members, I am fresh from an amazing experience thanks to
    Orchid. After an email conversation with Gerrald Lewy about classes
    in stone setting he graciously invited me to visit him in Toronto for
    a crash course. I spent several days at his elbow taking notes and
    following him around while he visited casters, polishers, jewelers
    and others in the 14 story building where he works and in the
    neighborhood. Part of the education was watching the interactions
    with the other craftsmen and with those that arrived in his office
    with rush orders. Gerry shares his office with a stone dealer and I
    also learned from him. We went to the class that Gerry teaches at
    George Brown University and I had the benifit of his teaching in a
    formal situation too. His lessons are always given with humor and
    this helps the student to remember. This experience was so rich and
    helpful that it is hard to put into words. Gerry is a natural
    teacher, able to remember that the student doesn't have all the
    knowlege that he has. He explains very clearly and tells you why he
    does things this way and what happens if you chose another way.
    Gerry has spent his life learning his craft and is now deeply
    commited to teaching others. Thank you Orchid for making it possible
    for a novice form the wilds of Michigan's UP to meet and visit and
    learn from an urban maven from another country. Lori
