    Dee Dee, It is "sugilite" with a 'g.' a.k.a. 'Royal Azel.' 

    There are some opaque specimens, often used for carving or
    cabochons. Also available in a RICH purple translucent variety, which
    is MUCH more expensive. 

    A friend of mine used to deal in it.  If you're interested, I'll
