    I'm a self-taught hobbyist, but I learned a lot of very solid basic
    info from _Introduction to Lapidary_ by Pansy Kraus

    Her suggested reading list and bibliography has been invaluable for
    learning more.  Many of the back issues of Lapidary Journal has also
    helped (recent issues haven't had as much useful beginner info, but
    these things seem to have been cyclic, historically).
