    Barbara, It sounds as though you might be using a "beading" needle
    that is a longer, slender version of a sewing needle. They do tend
    to be thicker at the eye end. You might want to switch to a twisted
    "beading" needle that is a very slender wire that is folded back on
    itself and twisted. The "eye" of that type of needle is very thin.
