This age-old technique is used by jewelers, stone setters, metalsmiths, wax carvers and enamelists for a wide range of applications. Our engraving workshop focuses primarily on how to layout and engrave lettering in a variety of styles including script and block. Students also learn to design, layout and engrave monograms, ornamental borders and floral patterns. Some graver experience required. Advanced Chains with Susan Wood, April 12-13, 2003, $295 + kit For those with basic chain making skills, here is a great opportunity to expand your skills and explore more advanced patterns. Emphasis is on soldered links as well as loop and loop variations. Leading the class through a variety of samples, the instructor will cover metal characteristics relative to chain making, calculating proportions, selecting the proper gauge for each size link, forming and shaping links, soldering and fusing links, drawing the final chain to shape and final finishing for chains. Prerequisite: Basic chain making skills Setting Outside the Box with Jeff Georgantes, April 12-13, 2003, $295 + kit The underlying concept behind setting stones is to mechanically entrap the gem securely while revealing as much of it as possible. This workshop explores the theory of setting while discovering new and exciting ways to utilize both common and odd-shaped stones into jewelry. Bezels, prongs and channels will be discussed as well as the use of gravers, hammers, diamond drills and burs, sewing, adhesives and cold connections to set stones into stones, wood and other materials Romantic Connections with Doug Zaruba, April 14-18, 2003, $795 + kit Hinges, fasteners, hooks, clasps, catches, latches, locks and linkages all serve a similar purpose: they connect things. If you approach these connections as a romance, a kind of dance between two separate parts, the results can be dramatic, quietly harmonious or even secret and concealed. In this workshop, you will watch close up, as Doug Zaruba introduces a wide range of connections and then embellishes them with details as he guides you to create your own connections to take home. Prerequisite: Fabrication 2 or experience. Creative Hammering with Leonard Urso, April 14-18, 2003, $795 + kit Learn classical metalsmithing techniques from one of the foremost masters of our time. This workshop covers basic to advanced skills in chasing and repousse to create ornamental designs on metal. The workshop includes tool making, the creation of flat linear designs and the formation of dimensional designs through the use of punches. Previous experience is helpful but not required. Open to all levels. Flexing Your Muscle with Harold O=EDConnor, April 26-27, 2003, $295 + kit This workshop presents an array of tips, tricks, short cuts and interesting techniques using flex shafts and micro motors along with their accessories. Many abrasives, milling and shaping tools will be introduced. Specific techniques are presented, including carving hard waxes, shaping, drilling and setting stones, finishing, carving bone and lots more. After this workshop, you will gain a new appreciation of the versatility of the flexible shaft machine. Open to all levels. I hope to see you in class!
