Subject: Re: [Orchid] Optical Question?

Hi Jim, I have to wear both my glasses and optivisors at the same
time in order to see my work, I think that's typical of a lot of
jewelers out there. Are the trainees glasses different somehow that
they can't wear both? If so, maybe a description of the problem
will help with a solution. Best regards, Marta

I wear glasses, and my optivisor fits over them without any
    problem.? Margaret

A friend of mine has a watchmaker magnifying set up which clips onto
the stem of his glasses. Might be worth investigating. Betsy (Metals
Student in Texas) Psst-- Hey! is that Olaf? I won't tell anybody!

Hi Jim, I've been using the Opticaid clip on magnifier for about 10
years. It's made from polycarbonate (?) & is very light weight to
wear. It attaches to the rims of your glasses using wire springs.
    They're available in 6 strengths from 1 1/2 to 3 1/4 power.

There's another brand that attaches to your glasses using the 'clip
on sunglass technique'. However, these are heavier & I found the
weight & black mounting plastic objectionable.

The Opticaid magnifiers are listed in Stuller's #33 tool catalog on
    page 266, item #7, series29-7700 thru 29-7705, $18.95.

I'm sure they're available other places as well, but that's the only
catalog I have that lists them.

No connection to Opticaid or Stuller, just a satisfied Opticaid
    user.

It seems like she needs an optivisor with a lower power
magnification. I have severe astigmatism, and can use an optivisor
over my glasses. If she has "old age far sightedness," it helps a lot
to get a pair of prescription glasses corrected for reading distance
only, not bifocals or blended lenses. Alana Clearlake

From: "Jim" <jmarotti AT dtccom.net>

Although I use reading glasses under my optivisor for normal work, I
wasn't able to get close enough to the work piece when sawing without
hitting the optivisor with the saw frame. My solution was to go to
Walgreens where they sell soft plastic reading lenses by Hydrotac.
They look like a bifocal lens and are used for turning glasses into
reading glasses. They are applied with water and can be removed and
reused indefinitely. They come in magnifications of up to +4.00, and
if you put them on either bifocal or regular reading glasses you can
get up to +8. They run about $20 a set, are quite clear and work
great. If you get a set of bifocal glasses with reading lenses and
apply them over the small lenses, you don't have to remove them when
you look up from your work.

Jim I wear glasses all of the time and also use an optivisor over
them. I also use a magnifier mounted on my bench. Deb

There is a little known devise called a 'jewelrs spot'. It is a
actually a small lens glued to the surfaces of the glasses. it is
placed off to the side of the direct vision path. They are available
in a variety of strengths. Bill

how about one of the lamps with magnifier built into it?

From: Linda Walsh <Linda.Walsh AT rcn.com>

Hi Jim, There are magnifing lenses like those in Optivisors that clip
onto eyeglass frames, so the wearer is looking through her
prescription and the magnifier at the same time. They are available
in the same powers and focal lengths as Optivisors. Look in your
favorite tool catalog for Optivisors and you'll find these
magnifiers in the same section. Linda

Why can't she wear her glasses under the optivisor? This is the
exact problem it was designed for.

It may be that the mag plate you have in the visor is too strong,
change it out to a lesser one. Remember that the optivisor has a
fixed focus point for each plate (working distance), and you need to
move your work (or head) nearer or further to find that point.

Jim, I have been using a Bausch & Lomb Magna Visor with glasses,
progressive lenses with a correction for a vertical astigmatism. They
are available from Stuller for about $27. Joel

Normally, Optivisors fit quite nicely OVER glasses. What can't she
use the visor right over hers? If she's nearsighted, then keeping
her glasses on essentially makes her a little more faresighted, so
she might find it comfortable to use a slightly stronger lens plate
    in the optivisor... Peter

Hi: Not sure what the problem is. I wear tri-focals and still use
an Optivisor. Maybe the magnification of the Optivisor isn't correct
for her. Has she tried various lenses? Maybe she needs more or less
than is being provided. Otherwise, there are magnifiers that clip
onto the top of the glasses to be flipped up or down as needed.
Maybe she could try those. Kay

Hi Jim, I use an Optivisor over my prescription glasses. Is there
any reason why she can't do this? Beth
