My experience with this was pre-9/11, so I am sure they're even more
aggressive about this now. Approximately 2 years ago my family and
I flew from SF to LA to visit friends for the holidays. We had
prepared lots of tasty holiday treats to share with various friends
and relatives and the items were packed in tins in our locked,
checked baggage. When we arrived in LA, our bags did not. They came
2 hours later and had clearly been gone through. The locks were cut
cleanly off the bags (we were lucky in that it could be done without
the bags being ruined) but the food had clearly been handled and
messily repacked. With this as a guideline, post-9/11 I have never
sent anything through checked bags that I could not or would not want
to lose. regards, Donna Blow, dzines by donna dmblow AT ix.netcom.com

    Thanks for the info Elaine,

Yes, I'm sure I could ship the tools ahead. The point is this
incurs extra expense for someone, either the school or myself.
Also, more often than not, many of the tools and supplies are being
used in my studio up to a day before I leave. Shipping adds lead
time at the beginning and lag time at the end.

At the very least I will have to change the way I do things. This
will include creating a "teaching kit" that is never disassembled,
getting things ready way in advance, etc. The problems happen when 2
trips are scheduled w/in a week of each other. The costs and
realities of shipping under such tight time lines is a matter of
    concern.

Of course, I could space trips at longer intervals, etc. There are
undoubtedly ways around all of this. It's just that at some point
the hassles simply outweigh the benefits...

    Not complaining just commiserating. Andy

I second this. Andy, I would carry your bags personally if I
thought you would stop teaching. Anyone who has the priviledge of
attending an Andy Cooperman workshop is a very lucky person. I would
even cop to being a potential groupie if I wasn't so damn busy
    myself! -k

Hi Andy, re traveling with your finely tuned tool cases. I've found
flying with my jewelry that they will indeed go through EVERYTHING
very carefully, but they have been careful and considerate. You are
not allowed to touch anything while they are taking things out and
inspecting them, but you may comment on what needs careful handling
etc. they will allow you to repack your things yourself . this is
for carry on baggage. I suggest you call the airports in question and
speak with their security people. Seems to me that they might be
very cooperative and have you come a little earlier and have your
checked baggage hand cleared in your presence so that you can be sure
your tools are not damaged or lost. I've found the security people
happy to be helpful when i tell them up front that i know i have
high-value and suspicious looking baggage that they will want to
inspect carefully. Rather than setting up roadblocks and inviting
argument, I've found people wanting to keep things smooth and calm.
    Good luck! marianne hunter
