Hi David,

The J.O. Crystal Company in Long Beach California makes the Ramaura
Ruby. This is the first (so far as I know) lab-grown gem to have been
"inducted" as it were into the Smithsonian Hall of Gems; its quality
is such that, were it not for the addition of a special dopant which
shifts its fluorescence, it could be indistinguishable from a natural
    stone.

I know the company also markets Alexandrites; I saw some when I
visited in January. I believe these come from Russia, as do probably
a majority of today's lab-grown gems. You might try also the Morion
Company of Brighton, Mass, a large dealer in Russian material.

    Cheers, Hans Durstling Moncton, Canada
