    Hi there, there are a couple of ways to dispose of Nitric acid short
    of pouring it down the drain.  You can neutralise it with sodium
    bicarb.  If you can get pH strips, they'll help you work out when to
    stop adding bicarb. Just add the powder a little bit at a time and
    stir.  When it's neutral (or you're getting an excess of
    un-solubilised bicarb), you can pour the liquid into an absorbant
    material, let it dry and throw it out.  The acid will get warm as you
    add the bicarb.  All the necessary protective gear should be worn
    when you do this (eyes, mouth/nose, skin - including feet) and clear
    a decent space around you. The other alternative is to ring up your
    local government department and get the trash disposal section. 
    They'll be able to give you the name of a few companies that will
    dispose of the acid for you.  The disposal company might require an
    MSDS from you on the acid. Hope this helps Eileen
