My husband and I just returned from Italy where I purchased a
beautiful carnelian intaglio ring. I would like to purchase more of
this type of engraved stone - unmounted. Does anyone out there have a
source for these? Would be most grateful for leads - stone could be
other than carnelian, although this one is beautiful. Thanks for your
help.
Also - is there a source to interpret the carvings on the stone? This
one appears to be a rooster having a conversation with a man.

Penelope–is this piece old?? If so, it is likely a family crest; the
ring possibly designed as a seal. --AB
Penelope - I have been looking for similar stones lately myself.
With mixed results. One place you might try is James Garriti Lapidary
(212)226-7911. Steve. I have also found intaglios on Ebay. However,
you have to be very careful or you can end up with plastic or glass.
Steve.
