Loss
Date: 06/16/2011
History shows there has always been recourse to war when diplomacy fails; the more distant the decision is made from those who actually fight and their families, the greater is the risk of losing understanding of the enormous, overwhelming, irreversible catastrophe that the loss of young lives is to families and loved ones. The pendant appears rusted to make clear the antiquity and duration of this pain that impacts so intensely on so many lives. In the photograph a mother reaches desperately towards the headstone on her son's grave, hoping against hope that somehow she can reach him, but knowing that nothing she can do will ever bring him back. This is what war really is; the greatest human pain, and this cost multiplied many many times is the real cost of conflict that must be weighed up when decisions are made so far away to enter into wars.
It is made of patinaed copper, a photograph printed via dye sublimation onto aluminium, epoxy putter and enamel paint.
The dimensions are: The necklet is 46 centimetres, and the pendant is 9.5 cm x 5.5 cm.

Out To Sea
Date: 06/22/2011
With this piece, I had in mind a day out to sea. Perhaps, crab fishing. And thought of all of the things that would be aboard a larger fishing vessel. I felt the stone itself had a very ethereal quality to it which could be akin to the mysteries of the ocean.

As I was making this, I sort of daydreamed that the stone was actually spun sugar. That thought lead me to think about all the ways sugar is used in desserts. Before I knew it, I was fantasizing about creme brulee and that wonderful, torch-fired layer of caramelized sugar on top. The best part is that first bite. Taking your spoon and "tap tap", making the first crack in the sugar and the little crunch that goes with the decadent cream...

Rust in Peace
Date: 07/07/2011
As a working jeweller who is usually worked to the bone with commission work this is a total self indulgence. Something that I have made in what little spare time I have that eventually took precedence over customers work until I was finished.
This incorporates a 9ct rode gold watch chain from 1920 and two nails from my Grandad's shed. It has been made using techniques taught to me by my old metalwork teacher who before he retired spent two years teaching me blacksmithing, the trade he started with as a young boy.
So as a salute or tip of the hat to these great people, the smell of Grandad's shed, (open paint pots, creosote fence paint, hot wooden sheds on a summers day) and the sound of the hammer and the anvil I have made the 'Rust in Peace' bracelet.
I have cold riveted some of the joints and soldered others. The bullet cut topaz is secured in place with a welded under panel whereas the antique cut sapphire has been deliberately crudely set. Finally I heated it to just under a red colour and quenched it in dirty old engine oil to give it a black look and hopefully not to rust on my wrist.
It has been a pleasure to know that every slip of the hammer only enhanced the finished piece as to the catastrophe of errors when dealing with customers jewellery.

Juniper wood, silver, nylon, diamond.
Burnt, frozen, radiated, raised from the dead – the water bear an evolutionary masterpiece.
The water bear is a 0,5 – 1 mm animal. A bit chubby, segmented with eight legs and an amazing survivor. In experiments it has been exposed to 340 degrees of heat, hypothermia, radiation and drought. But in situations where all other creatures give in, the water bear endure. This little animal can go into a state of cryptobiosis, where all the things we normally define as life are shut down. Encapsulated in this state it can slumber waiting for things to get better. It can lie like this for decades until one day when times has changed, the conditions has become better, the spark of life is lit and the water bear wakes up.

In china the sound of the crickets is highly valued. It is said to stimulate creativity and keep the audition vital. Therefore many Chinese keep crickets in their homes. All crickets do not naturally have a beautiful tone. This can a cricket tuner set right by carefully putting a drop of resin on the crickets wings. With a large number of tuned crickets the owner can if he or she wishes, form an entire orchestra of crickets.

I am fascinated by the change of a material's appearance and in this series, my materials open fresh pathways, meandering through new discoveries in layering, textures and forms, offering the viewer an experience not only visually, but also, through
touch.....
Surface Progression Over a Linnenbrink
Date: 07/08/2011
Effetre glass, silver, brass
12" x 8" x 1"
US$ 1,400
Marcus Linnenbrink is an artist who is not yet a household name, though surely one day he will be. I spotted his resin piece CHINESE DRAGON BITING ITS OWN TAIL in an art magazine and immediately I was inspired to make beads. He pours multiple layers of resin over the surface, then uses a router to drill out concentric circles of color. I imagined plain glass beads rolling over the surface of his piece and picking up the areas he had removed--as the beads progress over the surface, they pick up more and more colorful bumps.
