member), 1/4 Chirachaua Apache, 1/2 White Boy. Currently residing
on the Laguna Pueblo Reservation in the village of Paguate, NM.
His occupational hazard for 13 years running, has been owning,
operating and managing Custom Steel Body Jewelry (www.customsteel.com)
making stainless steel body jewelry for the body piercing industry.
This was his start in working with stainless steel, specifically
type 316LVM, 316L and 316.
Making jewelry started 18 years ago when Pat was fortunate enough
to study under a local silversmith, Greg Lewis. Working in traditional
materials (silver, copper) learning traditional repousse techniques
(stamp and hammer), this gave him a firm foundation in jewelry
fabrication, tool development, and general craftsmanship. Several
years later, he met Charlie Bird, another esteemed jeweler from
Paguate. He taught Pat a different view on silverwork and aesthetics
of jewelry design. |

Brooch: Tourmalines, 14k & 22k gold,
fabricated & broom-cast
Value $1,500
Brooch: Titled "The Maze" of Tourmalines, 14k & 22k
gold, fabricated &
broom-cast
Broom-casting is an old technique which I have adopted and adapted.
I pour molten gold over the soaking wet, upturned bristles of a
straw broom. The results vary greatly, but generally echo the dripping,
columnar shapes of stalactites. While some of these one-of-a-kind
castings are usable in their "raw" state, most are modified,
refined and combined until they suit the concept of each jewelry
piece.
I would say that "Maze" is my seminal piece of broom-cast
jewelry! It has all the elements of my signature (and favorite)
style of broom-cast pins: lots of small stones combined with fluid,
organic bits of gold in a geometric, almost grid-like pattern. "Maze" was
the inspiration for an ongoing series of such pins, including the
piece called "Orange Crush" which graced the cover of
the inaugural issue of Jewelry Artist (nee Lapidary Journal) in
June of 2007. Like all of my work, it is very much one-of-a-kind!
"From jasper to jade, sodalite to sapphire, drusy to diamond,
these natural works of art fire my imagination and challenge me
to invent environments for them that will enhance their uncommon
beauty."
Not confined to a single aesthetic, Beth Rosengard instead depends
on a love of stones and clean design to define her style. Self-taught
and continually inspired by the variety in nature's creations,
Rosengard allows her work to be ruled by her ever-restless imagination.
The stones always come first for Rosengard. Determining their
layout is the most essential step toward developing the final form.
Only after the general organization has been created does she consider
what means of joining the material with metal best suits each piece.
Rosengard knows that through her distinctive method of handcrafting,
she can most fully reveal the striking qualities of each stone. |
