Before the invention of the mirror the primary way that humans were able to view thermselves was through the medium of shadow. The shadow has a dual nature, revealing aspects of both non being and existence. Shadows are fleeting and ethereal representations that have a direct relationship with light and substance. They absorb light, and yet are defined by its absence.
